Windows computers come preinstalled with a program called Snipping Tool that can be used to take snapshots of all or part of the screen. Macs actually have a built-in snipping tool feature.
How to take a screenshot on a Mac
- Before we look at alternatives, let's start with the native snipping tool for Mac. Use the Command + Shift + 3 keyboard shortcut to capture the entire screen. The Command + Shift + 4 shortcut lets you select an area of the screen. Here, if you keep holding the Shift button, and then press the Space key, you'll enter the window capture mode.

When the Snipping Tool application starts and you click New, your screen will become cloudy and the Snipping Tool popup application screen shown below will appear.
It can be said that Grab is a built-in free Snipping tool for Mac designed by Apple Inc. It has four screenshot modes for you to choose: Selection, Window, Screen and Timed Screen. After taking screenshot, it also provides an image editor for you to crop and annotate the image. As I've said earlier, Mac computers don't come baked with a native snipping tool. However, you can still take a screenshot on Mac with some simple keyboard shortcuts. All that you have to do is to hit the Shift + Command + 3 buttons concurrently. If you want to capture a specific section of your desktop screen, click the Shift + Command + 4.
To use Apple's built-in snipping tool to take screenshots, press Shift+Command+4 simultaneously on the keyboard, then click and drag the designated area, and a image file will be created on your desktop.
